Schaumburg Receives APWA Excellence Award in Snow and Ice Operations

The Village of Schaumburg is one of five agencies in the nation that has been selected to receive the Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) for 2022.

The award was established by APWA to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works snow and ice operations, while minimizing environmental impacts. Categories evaluated for this award include materials/handling, equipment, training, community outreach, technical and environmental.

“I am excited to accept this award that recognizes our entire program, including front line maintenance workers, operators, and mechanics to the foremen who manage the operations to village management that supports our efforts,” said Michael Hall, Director of Engineering and Public Works.

Schaumburg’s Engineering and Public Works Department is responsible for providing snow and ice control for 219 centerline miles of streets and 431 cul-de-sacs. In addition to state-of-the-art equipment and resource management tools, the village also employs an interactive snow map for the public called SnowStat. This application, which was developed in tandem with the village’s Information Technology Department, provides near real time updates on snow removal operations on village-maintained streets during snow and ice events.
